چکیده

F O R almost a dozen years the University of California has been active in prosthetics research. On the recommendation of the then Committee on Prosthetic Devices (now the Prosthetics Research Board) of the National Research Council, there was established in 1945, with the cosponsorship of the School of Medicine in San Francisco and the College of Engineering in Berkeley, the Prosthetic Devices Research Project (now the LowerExtremity Amputee Research Project), a program designed primarily for the purpose of conducting studies in several areas of importance to leg amputees, especially fundamental studies of the processes of human locomotion. Supported on a continuing basis with funds supplied by the Veterans Administration, the work has from the beginning been under the supervision of Howard D. Eberhart, Professor of Civil Engineering, and Verne T. Inman, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. In the course of fundamental research, the need for experimental devices required the activation of an engineering design group, and consequently a small staff of design engineers,

Prosthetic use and functional and social outcome following major lower limb amputation.

A total of 175 consecutive below and above-knee amputees sent to the prosthetic workshop in Helsinki for prosthetic fitting from 32 hospitals were reviewed to determine their functional ambulation and social adaptation. The average age of the patients was 62.2 years at the time of the prosthetic fitting. The mortality was 11% (19) during the first postoperative year. One-year postoperative info...

Evaluation of problems and needs of veteran lower-limb amputees in the San Francisco Bay Area during the period 1977-1980.

From 1977 through 1980, 251 veterans from the San Francisco Bay Area received permanent lower-extremity prostheses at the two local Veterans Administration hospitals. For a survey, 213 of the 251 were contacted and 179 of them (84%) responded to written or telephone questionnaires concerning their prosthetic problems and complaints and their recommendations regarding prosthetic care. Advantages and Limitations of New Sports Prosthetic Components Developed for Running in Lower Limb Amputees

Until some years ago, running in lower limb amputees was basically restricted by the inadequate dimensions of available prosthetic components that usually did not allow for the adequate dynamics necessary for running at lower speeds. Newly developed prosthetic components for recreational sports have enabled a great number of lower limb amputees to participate in running as an endurance sport. T...

Reaction times of normal subjects and amputees with below-knee and above-knee prostheses during stepping.

Reaction times (RTs) of nine normal subjects and 11 amputees with prosthetic limbs were examined in standing posture and during stepping movement. There were significant differences of RTs between standing and stepping, and between the phases of the stepping cycle in both the normal subjects and the BK or AK amputees with prosthetic limbs. The attentional demand during stepping movement and the...

Balance in lower limb child amputees.

Postural stability of five unilateral above-knee amputee children was measured when wearing the SACH and the experimental Child Amputee Prosthetic Project (CAPP) prosthetic foot. Excursions of the centre of pressure of the supportive forces were recorded via force platform during sustained weight-shifting forward, backward, left, right, and during normal standing. Visual proprioception effects ...
